Generative Arpeggiator Mono-Synth

μ-toniPick a chord. Let it play.

Choose a scale and a chord, and μ-toni plays it one note at a time, climbing and falling through as many octaves as you like. Each note is played by a two-oscillator wavetable synth with its own envelopes. It works out every note as it goes, so you can move any control while it plays.

An arpeggiator that thinks
for itself.

A normal arpeggiator plays back a list of notes. μ-toni stores no list. It works out each note from the scale, chord, root, octaves and direction as they are right now, so changing any control reshapes the arpeggio on the very next step.

Scale and chord pool

Twelve scales and about thirty-five chords, from simple triads to altered jazz shapes. Inversion re-voices the chord, and you can stack it over one to four octaves. Snap keeps every note strictly in key.

Direction runs from always falling, through up-and-down, to always climbing. The shorter sweep skips notes evenly so the timing stays steady. The pattern is the same on every pass. Nothing is random.

Direction

Wavetable mono synth

Two wavetable oscillators plus noise, with FM, phase and ring modulation between them. Sixteen filter types, and amp, filter and pitch envelopes. Legato and glide give you 303-style slides.

Sound

Modulate almost everything

Eight modulators per layer, smooth or stepped. A stepped modulator on Chord makes a chord progression. One on Root walks the key. A slow one on Direction makes the arpeggio breathe.

Modulation

Up to eight layers

Each layer is its own arpeggiator and synth. Stack them for layered, detuned or interlocking arpeggios over one shared tempo. A new μ-toni starts with one layer.

Layers

Play it from a keyboard

Hold a key and it becomes the root of the arpeggio. Set the trigger to MIDI and the pattern plays only while you hold a key. The same mixer, effects and presets as the rest of the μ-series.

The name comes from a customer of a music shop where I used to work in Bristol. His name was Tony. No matter how many times he was told that an arpeggiator was called an arpeggiator, an Italian word, Tony always called them “appagators”.

The Settings page carries his often asked question:

Has it got an appagator, is it a powerful tool?

Bless him, he was a bit special. I wonder what became of him.
